Bring your students to Mackinaw’s Historic Village. We offer a 2-1/2 hour visit during which we interpret our 1-room school, our pestilence house, and offer either historic games or a nature hike.
Half-day Schedule
Times can change based on your transportation needs
9:00 a.m. Opening ceremony at flag pole
9:05 - 9:30 Pest house interpretation
9:35 - 10:00 Freedom school interpretation
10:05 - 10:30 Historic games (or nature hike)
10:35 - 11:00 Spelling bee
11:30 - 11:35 Closing ceremony
Or you can come for a full-day visit. In this option we give 20-minute interpretations of both the school and the pest house. The remainder of the day is open to use our facilities for your own program.
Our restored facilities include an original 1-room school, Mackinaw City’s original pest house, an eating area, a historic farm in the early stages of restoration, and modern outhouses. The buildings are heated with wood-burning stoves. Electricity can be provided and we have a well.
Application deadline is March 25, 2009. Cost per student is $5, chaperones free. Fifty percent of the cost must be submitted with the application.

THE PEST HOUSE is a typical quarantine facility found in every Michigan community around 1900. We have discovered that today’s students have been vaccinated against the horrible diseases of the past and thus have difficulty understanding the threat of contagious diseases. Our goal at the Pest House is to explain contagious diseases, to explain that everyone is vulnerable, and to explain simple techniques to prevent the spread of disease.
